Digital Media Intern

Duty Station: Lalitpur, Nepal
Duration: Three Months (with possibility of extension)
Working Hours: Full Time (Monday to Friday)

Background
We are a non-profit organisation, dedicated to enhancing online safety for children and young people in Nepal. We collaborate with the government, schools, colleges, caregivers, the media, the private sector, and other national/international stakeholders to raise awareness on the safer use of the internet and digital devices. Our work includes advocacy, capacity building, awareness raising and conducting research studies.

Purpose
An internship at ChildSafeNet is a crucial opportunity for an intern as to be involved in communication. The intern will assist in managing digital media channels and materials for different projects of the organisation. They will also assist in the planning and implementation of online safety programmes.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Assist in generating, editing, publishing and sharing engaging content for websites and social media pages (e.g. original text, photos, videos and news)
  • Assist in the production of videos on online safety awareness
  • Be creative with new ideas, resources and activities so that they are fun/interesting/ engaging to the appropriate audiences
  • Provide feedback from social media trends and research; relay it to the programme teams
  • Stay up to date with current technologies and trends in social media, design tools and applications
  • Create, maintain, and grow new and existing social networks, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and Instagram
  • Assist in managing and updating the ChildSafeNet website
  • Ensure active online community engagement (social media page followers/viewers, YouTube subscribers/viewers and website visitors) – page and post likes, page follows, sharing of posts, video views, web page visits, comments, messages, etc.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree, or ongoing master’s degree, preferably in media studies, IT, communication, journalism, design, or social science, including, social work, sociology, development studies or related fields
  • Knowledge of children and young people’s online behaviour and risks is desirable
  • Familiarity with generating text and graphic content for social media
  • Good knowledge of digital technology and use of office computer applications, including working with databases
  • Excellent knowledge of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram, YouTube and other social media handles
  • Knowledge of graphic designing and video editing
  • Strong IT skills in using key applications, including MS Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint

The Institute was established in 2014 by a team of anti-trafficking experts coming out of the United Nations who created an alliance of private sector, civil society, and government partners committed to transformational, sustainable, worker-driven approaches to labor issues, especially those occurring in global supply chains. It is staffed by leading regional and international experts in labor rights, business and human rights, and research and technology.

OVERVIEW

The Operations Officer will play a critical role in ensuring that the work of the Institute is cost-effective, efficient, and in adherence to donor and partner policies, procedures, and regulations. The ideal candidate will have a background of office administration, human resources and logistics, be detail-oriented and able to work within our multi-national team.

SCOPE OFWORK

Specific aspects of the scope of work of the Operations Officer include:

1. HUMAN RESOURCES

  • Responsible for Issara staff recruitment, closely following Issara recruitment policies and approaches, and both directly conducting recruitment and documentation as well as supporting hiring managers to conduct recruitment for their teams.

  • Responsible for staff and consultant human resources including organizing new team member orientation (in collaboration with the hiring manager), the timely management of visas and work permits for foreign staff, compliance with all social security and tax requirements by the government, ensuring that all staff and consultant contracts are updated, and management and tracking of staff benefits such as annual leave and sick leave.

  • Support the staff performance planning process, and expand team building and staff development efforts.

2. ADMINISTRATION

  • Ensure that all organizational policies, as documented in the organization’s operations / staff manual, are always up to date and compliant with donor requirements. This includes human resources, procurement, all other related policies, etc.

  • Track government reporting, legal compliance, and tax requirements required in Nepal, and work with the country team and global operations team to ensure timely compliance with all requirements.

  • Draft, review, and/or approve correspondence to government and non-government partners as needed, to support daily operations and partnerships.

  • Assist with vendor selection and vendor relationships, ensuring good value for money. Contact with vendors to provide good service for Issara and other support as needed to the team. Be accountable for vendor relationships, and in developing policies and relationships to streamline Issara procurement.

  • Provide logistics support to program activities, including travel bookings, arrangement of transportation, venue bookings, and other details.

  • Responsible for office administration, including office maintenance, inventory tracking of equipment and supplies, and other needs.

  • Provide other support as needed to field teams, including support in the field on occasion.

3. FINANCE

  • Ensure clear documentation and approval processes for all Issara Nepal team expenses. Coordinate closely with the global operations team on finance tracking sheets to ensure all expenses follow Issara procedures, and are recorded, paid on time and documented.

  • Assist in identifying, mapping and coordinating with participants for focus group discussions and key informant interviews
  • Communicate and assist in preparing logistics for field visits and training sessions
  • Assist in note-taking during focus group discussions and in-depth interviews
  • Assist in translation and transcription of focus group discussions and in-depth interviews
  • Assist in managing and storing documents related to research projects
  • Assist in conducting capacity-building training and awareness sessions on cyber safety, as and when required
